Midsomer Norton South features on the BBC

In commemoration of the 6oth anniversary of the announcement of the closure of the Somerset & Dorset Railway, the BBC are running a feature on the Somerset section of the line.  With interviews and filming having taken place a couple of weeks ago, the railway has been put into the spotlight on both BBC Radio Somerset and BBC Points West.

The radio program is part of the Secret Somerset series, with Simon Parkin and is a five part feature, covering different parts of the old line.  Part 4 features Midsomer Norton, including interviews with Roger Burfitt and Harry Jones.  Also included are interviews with people remembering the railway, or who have been involved at other parts of the former line.

The story also featured on Points West lunchtime news including footage of Midsomer Norton South station, and a brief interview with Roger Burfitt.  Whilst its only short footage of Simon Parkin getting on the train and travelling part of the line (they did spend a lot longer filming!) it is good to see the railway, and Midsomer Norton, making the local news. A longer version was due to be broadcast in the evening but a power failure at BBC Bristol resulted in its cancellation.

The closure of the line took place in March 1966, having been postponed from January 1966.  There are plans to commemorate the anniversary next year - look out for more details nearer the time!
