60 Years Since the Closure of the Somerset & Dorset Railway

It is sixty years ago this week that the much lamented Somerset & Dorset Railway closed - as did many other railways as part of the Beeching Axe. Whilst much of the railway has disappeared under modern developments and roads, there are still plenty of traces of the railway to be found, and here at Midsomer Norton, you can still ride the historic line.  The railway will be commemorating the anniversary later in the year, with a number of events.

If you want to find out more about the history of the railway, and it's closure in 1966, then visit our museum in the old stables.  There is a wide variety of exhibits telling the story of both the railway and the station at Midsomer Norton over the years, from opening in 1874 to closure in 1966.

Featured here are a few of the items.

Name plates and loco numbers for Bude & Biggin Hill which hauled the last train on the line on 6th March 1966.

Tickets for the last train from Bath Green Park to Midsomer Norton

Souvenir Bochures for the enthusiast specials run on 6th March 1966
